They called it ‘Happy Valley’ because State College, Pennsylvania, did not suffer the pain of Great Depression as the rest of America did! Possibly because of it’s mainly academic structure and residents. It’s still recession-safe!
State College includes the main campus of the Pennsylvania State University and is the largest borough in the Centre County often referred to as including Harris, Patton and Ferguson townships also. In 1855, it was just a Farmers' High School of Pennsylvania.
State College is also known across America for its Arts Festival in July. Artists from across the country descend on State College not only for musical shows and theater activities but to enjoy the food and fun ranging from locally made funnel cakes to exotic Oriental cuisine. Shopping booths are also set up hawking handmade wares and other assorted items.
Also headquartered in State College is the American Philatelic Society (APS) which is the biggest non-profit stamp collecting and organization of philately in the world. Then, you cannot miss the Beaver Stadium which, with its seating capacity of 107,282, is the largest stadium in the United States and the third largest stadium in the world.
For sweet nothings when in State College, you have the Berkey Creamery which is the biggest university creamery in the United States.
State College is in the humid continental zone with plenty of sunshine round the year and sees droves of students descend upon it at regular intervals. Apart from charter buses, use of bikes, its bus services are excellent. For commuting needs, the town has buses provided by the Centre Area Transportation Authority, within the State College area. Greyhound Lines link it to over 2,000 locations across North America and the Dragon Deluxe Bus Line offers daily, non-stop service to New York City at discounted prices.
