Information about Wilmington:
Wilmington: Quiet getaway on the Delaware banks
Known to have had its entire downtown area under electronic surveillance during the 1980s and 90s, when drugs and crime wreaked the city, Wilmington owes its history to the Swedish settlers who set up Fort Christina in the 17th century as the headquarters for a New Sweden colony.
In 1655, the Dutch West India Company took over the area and renamed it Altena. British colonization began in 1664. World wars led to greater industrialization of the city while there was considerable growth during the Civil War. The city started producing ships, railroad cars, gunpowder, uniforms, blankets and other war-related goods. Wilmington was, by the late 19th century, making America’s most iron ships and gunpowder.
Located about 25 miles (40 km) southwest of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, one of America's largest cities, Wilmington also lays claim to being the last stop on Philadelphia's SEPTA rail transportation system.
Annual events in Wilmington include the Caesar Rodney Half Marathon and Delaware Distance Classic road race. The Wilmington State Parks, a set of four, including a zoo are open the year round. You can also check out the Delaware Sports Museum and Hall of Fame, Delaware Art Museum and the Wilmington Center for Contemporary Art.
The Grand Opera House was set up in 1871 by the Delaware Grand Lodge and therefore, has freemasonry symbols incorporated into its cast-iron facade.
Wilmington’s Holy Trinity Church, built in 1698-99, with blue granite has been declared a National Historic Landmark as it is America’s oldest church building that remains as it was originally built.
Because of its humid subtropical climate and being part of the Atlantic Coastal Plain, the winters are very cold. Rain is regular round the year but, on the west bank of Delaware river, Wilmington is a quiet getaway.
For getting around, tourists can opt for the DART First State (Delaware Authority for Regional Transit) that runs a bus service for the general public. There are about 40 bus lines criss-crossing Wilmington and its surrounding area. The inter-county bus service to Dover and seasonal service to Rehoboth Beach is also popular. New Jersey Transit offers a bus service to Salem County, New Jersey on the 423 Route while Greyhound Lines operate from the bus terminal at the rail station
