Information about Rockville:
Pegged as one of America’s best cities to live in, Rockville is all set to celebrate its sesquicentennial anniversary as an incorporated city in 2010. What was once just a group of houses contrasted by a jail, tavern and courthouse, is now known across America for its parks and public programs.
Rockville has its own Black history and today, apart from the Chinese, it has a large Korean and Indian population too. Rockville has also preserved several synagogues due its Jewish population. The tomb of author F. Scott Fitzgerald is in Rockville.
Situated in the Piedmont region and crossed by three creeks (Rock Creek, Cabin John Creek, and Watts Branch), Rockville served as an excellent refuge for semi-nomadic Native Americans as early as 8000 BC. Today, Rockville is also known for its seasonal festivals like Wine Festival and Martin Luther King Jr. Celebrations that are all held annually. The farmers’ market every week draws locals and tourists alike for fresh fruits and vegetables, cut flowers etc.
For those who love the outdoors, there is the biking trail and walking tours covering the historic sites, seasonal events at the outdoor ice-rink and at the RedGate Golf Course which is a championship 18-hole par-71 course.
Rockville’s art and theater scene rocks. It includes exhibitions of large-scale outdoor sculptures as part of Rockville’s Art in Public Places Program from June through October at the Rockville Civic Center Park. The park also includes the Glenview Mansion, the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre/Social Hall, the Cottage and the Croydon Creek Nature Center.
The weather is unlikely to spoil your holiday in Rockville though the summer can be warm with an average of 85.40 degrees Fahrenheit in July but rainfall is even round the year.
Because of its emphasis on the use of bikes, with an entire month being dedicated to the campaign, the only other alternative local residents prefer is the bus service. Whether it’s the bus routes through the city or the charter bus service, both are reliable and low cost affairs for getting around or, even going up to New York. In any case, if you’ve holidayed in Rockville once, the R.E.M. song ‘Don’t go back to Rockville’ won’t stop you from going back.
