Information about LGA Airport:
LaGuardia Airport is the smallest and the busiest airport among the three airports situated in the city of New York and handles mostly domestic and short distance flights to Canada, Aruba and Bahamas. After having been named and renamed several times, the name LaGuardia was officially finalised to commemorate a former Mayor of New York city, Fiorello H. La Guardia, who had originally built the airport. This airport holds the distinction of being voted as the greatest airport in the world in 1960 by all the aviation communities worldwide. The LGA provides bus facilities to its passengers to New York and Long Island and all its buses are wheel chair accessible. In addition there are private bus services connecting the airport to Hudson Valley, Long Island and Manhattan.
LaGuardia Airport has four terminals of which the Central Terminal Building, which is six blocks long, handles the domestic air traffic. It has four concourses, namely A, B, C and D which are accessible through 38 gates but it does not handle the flights of Delta and US Airways, who have their own separate buildings which are located on the east side of the airport. There is also a Marine Air Terminal which was originally meant for handling international flights but in due course of time was designated as a historical monument for handling only shuttle services. It is in the Marine Air Terminal that one would come across a gigantic mural named ‘Flight’ which depicts man’s conquest of the heavens.
Over a period of time, LaGuardia Airport has been limited to only short distance flights because of its size and the bulk of the air traffic activity has been shifted to the two bigger and modern airports. However, renovation is underway at the airport with the intention of replacing some of the out dated equipment with new and modern technology.
