Information about Kingston:
The city of Kingston is located on the west bank of the Hudson River in between the cities of New York and Albany. The first names of the city being Esopus and Wiltwyck, it became the first capital city of the state of New York in 1777 and because of its strategic location has been a witness to a number of battles and invasions. Kingston is connected to New York through a regular bus service which operates on a daily basis in addition to being flanked by important state highways on all sides. The main city of Kingston is broadly categorized as uptown, midtown and downtown. The uptown area is a historical centre with many of its buildings showcasing the 19th century Victorian architecture. This area is well known because of the Kingston Farmers Market, which is a fair held at Wall Street in Kingston and is very popular due to the variety of goods on sale ranging from baked goods and wines to plants, flowers and condiments. Downtown Kingston or Rondout features a number of art galleries and museums of contemporary arts and is well known for hosting a number of festivals the most popular of which is the Kingston Jazz Festival. The population of Kingston is predominantly white with other communities like the African Americans, the Asians and the other races having a small presence. The city is well known for its sports culture as it boasts of having a local team for almost all of the main sports like hockey, baseball, basketball and football.
