Chicago, also known as the “Windy City” was found in 1833 and is located in the state of Illinois. With an area of about 237 sq miles, it’s the largest city in the state. With a population of around 2.9 million, it’s the 3rd most populous city in the US. It has people from every religion, class and nationality. The main constituents are the whites with 39%, and then there are the Black African-American’s around 35%.
Located on the south western coast of Lake Michigan, is lined by the Chicago River on the downtown side, and by the Coulmet River on the industrialized area on far south. It is characterized by humid continental climate having four distinct seasons, with hot and humid summers, and snowy and chilly winters. Spring and Autumn are mild and humid.
The great fire of 1871 led to a total overhaul of the Chicago area, which since then has developed a very long skyline with huge skyscrapers, the tallest of which, is the 110m tall Sears Towers. The architecture of Chicago is characterized by high residential towers, single family homes and low rise buildings.
Chicago has been a favorite hotspot among the tourists attracting around 400 million tourists every year. Its famous for its nightlife and its cultural history. Famous tourists spots include Broadway centers like Bank of America Theatre, Ford centre of performing arts. Chicago also has many places where live music sessions are organized. Other tourists spots include the magnificent mile and the State street.
It’s the main transportation hub of the country, with nine interstate highways, and it’s the only city in North America where 6 class 1 rail Road’s meet. It’s also the 3rd largest Inter-modal port of the world after Singapore and Hong Kong. The public transportation in the city is handled by the Chicago Transit Authority(CTA), which has a vast number of buses in its service. Bus service in the surrounding 200 suburbs is provided by pace and paratransit service.
