The state of Illinois is one of the largest and arguably the most demographically diverse state of the United States of America. Besides being the fifth most populous state, it is also the transportation hub of the country, will Port of Chicago connecting the Great Lakes to the River Mississippi via the River Illinois.
Illinois is surrounded by states like Indiana, Wisconsin, Missouri, Iowa and Kentucky and also is bordered by rivers water bodies like Lake Michigan in the northeast, River Mississippi in the west and Ohio River in the southern border. Although the whole of Illinois is in the Interior plains, it is geographically divided into three regions: Northern, Central and Southern Illinois.
Illinois is known to have a widely varying climate. It generally experiences hot and humid summers while the winters are normally cool to cold. However, the southern part of the state has a humid subtropical climate, which makes the winters moderate. While the average rainfall ranges from 48 inches at the south to 35 inches at the north, the snowfall precipitation is 38 inches in the north compared to just 14 inches in the southern area.
Illinois has an estimated population of 12,901,563 as per 2008 figures, and about 14 percent of the population are foreigners, out of which half are from Latin America, and about 25 percent is from Asia, and 23 percent from Europe, and Africa and North America being the rest. Hence, demographically it is quite diverse. Based on religion, besides Christians, there is a growing population of Hindu, Muslims, Jews and Sikhs.
Illinois is home to numerous museums, which includes Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, John G. Shedd Aquarium, Field Museum of Natural History and Art Institute of Chicago to name a few.
Due to its central location, it has a good network of air, rail, auto and truck transportation. The airport of the state’s capital, Chicago is one of the busiest in the world. It also has an extensive railway network both for public and freight transportation. Bus lines mainly involve charter buses, school transportation, rental buses and company transportation. River Mississippi and River Illinois provide navigation on water possible and is a great aid to agriculture.
