Information about Richmond:

Pick up your bike and go explore the parks and hiking trails along James River. And, when tired, ‘Poe it out’ in the museum dedicated to the haunting-mystery writer-poet. If you’re in the lazy zone, there’s always the bus service. That’s if you’re visiting Richmond soon.

Commonwealth of Virginia capital, Richmond is at the intersection of Interstate 95 and 64. Despite embracing contemporary culture with its world-class art centers, stylish restaurants and shopping areas, Richmond has retained its traditions, conservative charm and mementoes from history. There’s the St John’s Church dating to 1741. It was where Patrick Henry gave his ‘Give me liberty or give me death…’ speech at the Second Virginia Convention of 1775 for Patriots discussing standing up against the British. The more modern Virginia War Memorial is a tribute to veterans killed in World War II, Korea, Vietnam and the Persian Gulf wars.

The State Capitol Building in Richmond was designed by former American Thomas Jefferson himself. It includes a museum in the Hall of the House of Delegates.  Nearby is the Shockoe Slip, the shopping area that retains its cobblestones from the late 19th century. But Byrd Theater is undoubtedly Richmond’s hot spot. Built a century ago, it is done up with Italian marble and murals and includes theater boxes and balcony over the auditorium. On Saturdays, visitors can sing along at the Wurlitzer organ musical ‘karaoke’ show even as theater staff brings back the old world charm with their 1920s costumes.

The Edgar Allen Poe Museum has several events lined up to celebrate 2009 as the writer’s bicentennial birth anniversary. You can explore downtown Richmond with a guided tour, thrill it up at Virginia’s Premier indoor-kart racing facility or go whitewater rafting.

Richmond is at the highest navigable point of the James River in the Piedmont area of Virginia. It experiences a humid subtropical climate with moderate seasonal changes. Summer temperature goes beyond 90 °F (32 °C) with high humidity but winter is mild with very light snowfall.

For getting around, in the Richmond region, apart from the intercity bus service of the Greyhound Lines, local transit and paratransit bus service is by the Greater Richmond Transit Company. Not many residents own cars and there is no other form of public transport in the area.

A weeklong holiday or a weekend getaway, Richmond is great for both.
