Information about San Diego Zoo:
The San Diego Zoo is one of the largest zoos in the world with over 4000 animals and over 800 species. The zoo, located in Balboa Park, San Diego, California is famous for housing the giant panda, which only a fee museums can boast of. The Zoological Society of San Diego operates the zoo on a land of 100 acres, which is leased from the City of San Diego. Incidentally the City of San Diego possesses ownership of all the animals and assets of the zoo.
The zoo provides a guided tour on a bus for about 75 percent of the area. There are a few overhead gondola lifts that provide the sky view, and thus are known as the Skyfari. There are different exhibits designed around a particular habitat and animals that live in the habitat. There are the African rain forests featuring gorillas; and the Tundra and taiga of the Artic during the summers featuring polar bears.
The Zoo also operates a Wild Animal Park, which is rather a bit more expansive than the zoo. The animals are transferred among the park and the zoos, as well as other zoos all over the world. The climate of the place suits a variety of plants and animals, proved by the growth of arboretum, a rare plant species. It also raises some rare animal foods and 40 different varieties of bamboo for the pandas and 18 different eucalyptuses for the koalas.
The Zoo is quite active in conservation and preservation of species, as evident from its efforts through its Center for Conservation and Research for Endangered Species (CRES). Many rare species are bred in captivity and then released in the natural habitat, when deemed fit. San Diego Zoo is quite innovative in its publicity too. It produces a short TV show where it loaned animals for publicity purposes.
